The course examines the historical underpinnings of the social democratic consensus, and investigates the effects of post-1984 changes to the welfare state and economy. It covers the following areas as they relate to contemporary social formations:
- social policy and welfare
- key concepts associated with political change such as ideology, representation and power.

What you will learn
In this online course you will develop skills of analysis, argument, expression, and a practical knowledge of contemporary issues. When you complete this course you will be able to:
- explain core social science concepts
- apply social science concepts – class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, ideology, representation and power - to the Aotearoa New Zealand context
- identify and interpret processes of social, historical and cultural change in Aotearoa New Zealand society.
